At some point in your health journey, you may have stepped onto the scale only to be disappointed by the number or feel like you’re not making any progress toward your goals. (Hint: It’s time for an Anytime Fitness body scan.) If you’re feeling confused or discouraged by the scale, you’re not alone! But here’s the truth: The scale isn’t the best and only measurement of your health — and a comprehensive body scan can give you a much clearer picture of what’s going on inside your body. Let’s talk about why and how!

We’ll cover:

  • What is the Evolt 360 body composition scanner and how does it work?
  • How the Evolt tells a fuller story than a traditional scale
  • Who should get an Evolt scan?
  • How to prepare for a body scan at Anytime Fitness

What is the Evolt 360 body composition scanner?

Found in most Anytime Fitness gyms, the Evolt 360 body composition scanner is a comprehensive tool for tracking progress related to health metrics like body composition, skeletal muscle mass, and bone mineral density. The Evolt also provides nutritional recommendations based on your body, age, gender, and personal fitness goals. Think of it like your very own Anytime Fitness scale, but so much better — and with a fuller picture of your health and wellness.

Evolt 360 body composition scanner vs. traditional scale: How do they compare?

A traditional scale only displays one number: your total body mass. While that’s one indicator of your health, it doesn’t tell the full story. It can’t sum up how strong you are, how far you can run, or how hard you’ve been training. Enter: the Evolt.

An Anytime Fitness Evolt scan takes things a step (or two) further, collecting more than 40 unique body and health measurements in a matter of seconds. Evolt insights include:

  • Skeletal muscle mass: The total weight of the skeletal muscle in your body, which controls voluntary movement like walking, running, and bending.
  • Body fat mass and percentage: How much of your body is made up of fat vs. bone and muscle. Tracking your body fat percentage can give you a fuller picture of how training is affecting your body (e.g., are you losing fat mass or muscle mass?).
  • Visceral fat levels: The amount of fat around your internal organs — high levels of visceral fat are a risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
  • Total body water: The total amount of water in your tissues, blood, and organs. This number tends to fluctuate, and retaining water could show up as a higher number on the scale.
  • Segmental analysis: As the name implies, segmental analysis divides your body into parts (arms, legs, trunk, etc.) to get a granular look at the total lean mass and fat mass in each segment, including circumference measurements.
  • BWI score: Aka “bio-wellness index.” According to Evolt, the BWI score is “a calculation based on the integrity of lean body mass versus total fat mass in order to provide a more purposeful number out of 10 as an overall measure of progress in the promotion of healthy lean body mass for longevity.”
  • Nutritional needs: Personalized recommendations for supplements, macronutrient breakdowns, and daily calorie needs to meet your body composition goals.
  • Bio age: Your overall health (comprised of factors like skeletal muscle mass, total body fat, and visceral fat) compared to your chronological age. Your biological age can often provide a more accurate reflection of your health and fitness level than your chronological age.

How does the Evolt 360 body scanner work?

How does the Evolt get such detailed measurements? It uses a method of measuring body composition called bioelectrical impedance, which sends an electrical current through your hands and feet. (Don’t worry — it’s completely safe and painless!) The small current moves through your tissues, such as muscle, bone, fat, and water, at different speeds. The scanner turns this data into information about the amounts of each type of tissue in your body.

When you step on the Evolt scanner, you’ll put in your age, gender, and height. The built-in scale will determine your weight. These factors, combined with the data from the scan, will inform your results and show where you fall on normative scales. This will give you an idea of measurements that are healthy or ones that may need improvement.

How accurate are Evolt scans?

Researchers have been exploring the use of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for estimating body composition for more than 40 years. In that time, BIA has been shown to be a reliable and repeatable method of measuring body composition compared to the DEXA scan, which uses X-rays to measure (rather than estimate) amounts of body tissues.

To get the most accurate scans, try to do them at the same time of day, at the same training status (i.e., before vs. after a workout), with the same amount of food in your stomach, and consistent hydration levels. All of these factors can impact results, so consistent measurement conditions will give you the most accurate sense of where you’re at. (This is true for all BIA scanners!)

Note: Menstruation can cause fluctuations in your measurements, so it’s important to scan at a consistent time in your cycle.

Who should get an Evolt scan?

In short: anyone! At Anytime Fitness, we believe data from the Evolt scanner combined with the insights of our expert Coaches (in person and on our App) can provide the information and support you need for a successful health transformation. This includes improving body composition, losing body fat, gaining muscle mass, increasing bone health, improving overall health, or optimizing your nutritional intake.

Let’s take a closer look at how an Anytime Fitness Evolt scan can support specific training and wellness goals.

Weight loss

Weight loss isn’t always a straightforward journey, but the Evolt scanner can help demystify the process with detailed metrics that you can apply to your training plan.

Here’s an example: If you’re gaining weight while working out, it could be that you’re gaining muscle mass faster than you’re losing body fat mass. With a traditional scale, you may not see these changes in body composition occurring, but the Evolt can give you a detailed look at what’s happening in your body.

It can also give you personalized recommendations for your diet. For example: If you’re trying to lose weight by maintaining a calorie deficit, the Evolt can tell you your daily calorie needs so you can adjust your intake based on that amount.

How the Evolt 360 supports GLP-1 weight loss

Taking a GLP-1 medication for weight loss means your personal nutrition needs extra care and attention. Due to reduced hunger signals, it’s not uncommon to consume fewer calories than usual when taking a GLP-1, so this makes monitoring your nutritional intake more important than ever. The Evolt can give you a base understanding of your daily nutritional needs, including calorie intake, vitamins, and macros, to plan your GLP-1 diet. Need extra guidance? Work with a Coach!

Strength training

If your goal is to increase strength and build muscle mass, the Evolt is your new best friend. With targeted insights on areas of your body that need development, you can focus on training specific muscle groups. Plus, the numbers give you confirmation of the progress you’re making (who doesn’t love a little motivation boost?).

Women going through menopause can also reap the benefits of Evolt strength insights. During every phase of menopause (perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause), hormone shifts cause muscle and bone mass to decline rapidly, which reduces overall strength and increases the risk of injury. The good news? Proper nutrition and strength training help slow and even reverse these trends. Regular Evolt scans can track your progress and give a recommended macronutrient breakdown to maintain your results.

General fitness and longevity

Evolt body scans can also be beneficial for anyone working to live a longer, healthier life. Working toward goals like increasing lean muscle mass, reducing visceral fat, or increasing bone density (which is a biomarker of longevity) can improve your physical fitness and wellness. Plus, the bio age metric and BWI score are measurable benchmarks to show your progress and can give you an idea of your overall health, vitality, and longevity.

How to prepare for an Anytime Fitness scan

When you come in for a Coaching session with a body composition scan, your Anytime Fitness Coach will walk you through the process step-by-step and review the results with you. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you prepare for a scan:

  • Scan at the same time of day each time for the most consistent results.
  • Keep your hydration and food volume around the same as your previous scans.
  • If you can, avoid scanning after training so your body is in a stable condition. This gets you more accurate measurements.
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages for 24–48 hours before your scan.
  • Avoid caffeine, pre-workout supplements, or thermogenics (fat burners) before your scan.
  • Ensure you are rested and calm (e.g., if you rushed to get to your scan, allow your blood pressure to return to normal levels first).
  • If you menstruate, take note of where you are in your menstrual cycle for reading consistency.

Does every Anytime Fitness have an Evolt 360 scanner?

Most Anytime Fitness locations offer body composition scanning during free fitness consultations, and most have the Evolt 360 scanner on-site. To inquire about availability, find your nearest Anytime Fitness gym or talk to a Coach.
