Understanding How to Use Your HSA/FSA for a Gym Membership
Many health insurance plans support your fitness journey through tax-advantaged accounts like HSAs and FSAs.
Here’s how to know what is eligible—and how to get reimbursed.
What is an HSA?
- You own the account (not your employer)
- Contributions are tax-deductible and reduce your taxable income
- Funds roll over from year to year with no expiration
- You can invest the balance and grow it tax-free
- Eligible for fitness expenses with a Letter of Medical Necessity
What is an FSA?
- Employer owns the account and sets contribution rules
- Contributions are made pre-tax through payroll deductions
- Use-it-or-lose-it: most funds expire at the end of the plan year
- No investment option—funds remain static in value
- Eligible for fitness expenses with a Letter of Medical Necessity
How to use HSA and FSA funds
How Do HSA and FSA Accounts Work?
Both HSA and FSA accounts allow you to save pre-tax dollars and use them for qualified medical expenses like prescriptions and co-payments. With an FSA, you can access the entire year’s contributions at the beginning of the year, while you may only use what you’ve saved in an HSA.
How to Use HSA/FSA for a Gym Membership
You may qualify to use your HSA or FSA for a gym membership if you have a Letter of Medical Necessity from a healthcare professional (like Dr. B). Once your letter is issued, you will pay for your gym membership or personal training fees as usual and save your receipt(s). Then, submit the expense for reimbursement along with your Letter of Medical Necessity to your HSA or FSA administrator.
How to Get Reimbursed ?
To get reimbursed for your gym membership, you will pay for it out of pocket, then save the receipt and submit it to your HSA or FSA administrator along with your Letter of Medical Necessity.
Is an Anytime Fitness Membership HSA/FSA Eligible?
You may qualify to use your HSA or FSA funds for your Anytime Fitness gym membership if you have a Letter of Medical Necessity from your doctor or another healthcare professional.
